Childhood Obesity: A National Epidemic
So many families today are fighting the obesity epidemic. Throughout
the U.S, obesity has increased in people of all ethnic groups, ages, and
genders. Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in
the U.S. (American Obesity Association). In addition to high adult
obesity rates, childhood obesity rates are rapidly increasing. The
Center for Disease Control says 32% of all US children are overweight.
As the nation battles this epidemic, so does our home state of Kentucky.
Recent reports rank Kentucky fifth in the nation, with 26.7% of adults
considered obese. If adults continue to maintain their current
lifestyle, their children will repeat the same unhealthy patterns.
Families must take the initiatives to change their lifestyle habits, or
this will be the first generation of children whose lifespan is shorter
than their parents and grandparents.
